While it might appear that this is a six drawer chest, only four of the drawers are actually drawers. The other two are a false front for a slide out secretary with compartments and internal drawers. This walnut cased chest has inlaid burl walnut sections as well a birds eye maple interior woods. We estimate that this butler's chest dates to the turn-of-the-century or the 1890-1915 era.

It is a Butler's Chest and was designed for the butler of the house to use for the household finances as well as for the silver and other valuable items of the home. It was meant to generally be in the dinning room or the den and it was not meant for the bedroom. It does lock like intended and it comes with its original key.
