Early American (Puritan) Church Pew

Talk about a great primitive. This is the oldest piece of furniture currently in our collection. We believe it is from the 17th century and may date back to the Pilgrims or Puritans. It is an English style church pew. Can you imagine sitting on this thing all day long. Back then, church services were from sun up to sun down i.e.; all day Sunday. Church fireplaces were not allowed to be used during Sunday services but there were nearby warming houses where church goers would go to warm up when they couldn't stand the cold in the church any longer. They also picked up warming stones (pieces of soapstone) from the warming house fireplace and often hid these warm stones in their clothing for when they returned to the church service.

We recently found this pew in Massachusetts and wonder how it got there? Could it have been brought over on the Mayflower or another early ship? How many early Thanksgiving dinners has this bench attended? Did John Smith or Pocahontas ever sit on this bench?

This pew is 8 feet long, 9 inches wide and about 19.5 inches off the ground. Our price is for store pick up only but local delivery or freight service is available so call for a quote.

Bird Cage Windsor Chairs set of 7 item#11F523

When was the last time you have seen a set of 7 antique Bird Cage Windsor Chairs? For most people the answer has to be never.

This is a set of seven (7) bird cage windsor chairs featuring the rod backed and bird cage design, bamboo turnings, solid plank seats and a great worn surface. One of the chairs is signed "GE "Burgis" and Hudson, Mass. They include a set of 4 closely matched, a set of 2 closely matched and one very similar to each of the others.

They recently came out of a private estate near Hudson, Mass whose principals had purchased them at a Skinner's auction in 1970. We believe they date from the 18th century to the early part of the 19th century.

Each chair is approximately 16 inches wide, 16 inches deep, 17 inches high to the seat and 35 inches high to the top of the back of the bird cage.

Arts & Crafts, Mission Oak, Dutch Arm Chair

This Mission Style oak chair dates to the Arts & Crafts movement and we think it may be from the "Cottage Furniture" line by William Leavens & Company, Boston, Mass (circa. 1896 -1947). Leavens worked in Boston and was a contemporary to Gustav Stickley, Charles Limbert, Elbert Hubbard (Roycoft), J. M. Young and Frank Harden. They all worked at the same time and each was actively involved in the Arts & Crafts movement. We think it dates to 1905-1910 and at the height of the Arts & Crafts era.

While Leavens hasn't yet reached the values routinely achieved by the others, his prices are definitely on the rise and he is now being mentioned more often in the same company as those other Arts & Crafts legendary furniture makers.

The chair is made out of quartered (tiger) oak and one would have originally paid about twice as much as the common oak version. Unfortunately, there is no label and we can't find any other form of signature. It probably did have a paper label at one time and now it is long gone.

The price is for in-store pick up only but local delivery or out of state freight service is available so please call or email for quote.

Oak Throne Chairs - pair

Now you can be a king and queen with these oak thrones. They have been restored and each seat features very heavy duty springs. We recently purchased them out of an old Vermont church that had been converted to a private residence but we do not know if they were original to the church or if they came out of a turn-of-the-century fraternal lodge (Masons?) of some sort. We do believe they are from 1900 or thereabouts and had been restored sometime in the 1980s.

Each chair is 24 inches wide, 59 inchs high, 22 inches deep and 18 inches high to the seat. There is one small (about 1/4 inch) and not very visible tear on one seat. It has stabilized and is not getting larger. We have blown up the photo to show you the tear, but the photo is larger than the actual tear.

Our price is for the pair so you are getting both chairs for one money.
This is in store pick up only but local delivery and out of state freight is available so please call or email for a quote.
